Jams of the Day! + Shocking Moments
January 8, 2010Lifestyles of the Reckless & Famous
A remake of the Mint Condition classic, re-named “Pretty Brown” by Amerie featuring Trey Songz. This song if straight fire, a great pop/R&B track duet and should have already been a single with a music video. As usual, record labels never know the right songs to release. It’s on Amerie’s new album In Love & War.
Here’s the music video for the song “Relator” by Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson, from their duet album Break Up. Very late ’60s inspired and very good.

So, last week, VH1 aired their five-part list of the 100 Most Shocking Moments in Music. It was pretty good, some decent new additions as the list that played during the last week of 2009 was actually a revamp of the their first list of Shocking Music which aired sometime in 2007. The new list wasn’t bad but definitely seemed a little pop in comparison to the first one which was gritty and pretty hardcore in exposing some of the most bizarre and downright despicable behavior of someof the most well-known entertainers in music. From watching the first one, you one-handedly got your music education that was provoking and interesting. Out of curiousity, I looked online to find the first list and was able to retrieve it. The second list also moved around events that were higher placed before, like the tragic death of Tejano star, singer Selena at number 27 to number 95, who died in 1995. Selena at numbe 95 but Fergie pissing herself is in the thirties? It’s bad enough homegirl bad so tragically, a high number should correlate to the what happened.
I said that the list was a little pop because for while some of the additions were legit (Rihanna & Chris Brown, Kanye West “vs”. Taylor Swift at the VMAs, Cam’ron and “no snitching”, Britney Spears shaving her head in the midst of her breakdown), some were kind of silly to be considered “shocking” and some omissions were obvious that should have been included. Like Beyonce falling down stairs during her performance of “Ring the Alarm” in Florida was hardly shocking but unintentionally funny. Maybe a little shocking because of her well premediated, overtly manicured image, but doesn’t compare to other catastrophes. Another ridiculous inclusion was lead singer of Creed, Scott Stapp visibily drunk on SpikeTV. I’m sure the two people who watched it thought it was hiliarous, but no one remembers that hot mess. I’m suprised they even included it. Adding Stapp and Beyonce were pretty much the equivalent of the first list including ’N Sync trying to get rid of Ron Perlman and off his record label, when Ron Perlman himself and his indecendent behavior should be a number.
And Courtney Love on the list three times! For sure, a Courtney Love incident should be on the list, but not three times, her comedic debut at The Roast of Pamela Anderson on Comedy Central was actually quite good, even if she was under some kind of shit.
The top ten of the list as nearly exclusively about the sudden deaths of music stars, and at this point I thought where was Madonna and Eminem! For a list concerning the most shocking moments in music, the fact that both artists made the first time but not here is not very good music research(ing) on VH1′s part. And I think bettter commentators would have been good, a majority of them the second time around didn’t even seem to be aware of the serious-ness of some of the moments.
And how about “The Day the Music Died”? That wasn’t featured at all, and the death of Dimebag Darrell (of the band Pantera) was spouted some outrage for being completely ignored as he was murdered on stage by a deranged fan.
The first Most Shocking List aired when VH1 and MTV still aried provocative music history and interview programs. VH1 should have just made it the top 125 momentrs in music. While keeping it at 100 makes more dense and intense, some music are so shocking, that if you’re gonna make a list, make it right and complete it for us music aficionados.
Below is the original top 100 list VH1 had aired: I hope you got Wikipedia opened in a separate window. Much of it is pretty amusing, but also sad.
